I had an idea for a piece that I knew was going to be difficult and would be a stretch for me. I'm still working on it and it may or may not work out but I have learned a lot. There's a lot to be said for doing something over and over until you have mastered it but there is also something to be said for trying new things and stretching yourself beyond where you normally go. That's just as true in life as it is in woodworking and turning or any other venture for that matter. None of us should become stagnant or complacent but we should be constantly reaching for new heights. That's not to say that we shouldn't be happy where we are at but part of happiness is the adventure of growing and the hope of things to come. This is life, sure there are ups and downs, but we're alive! Lets have fun with what God has given us!
Attempts that don't work out are part of learning and growing.
