The body of this piece is made from the roots of a crabapple tree. A root ball is fun to turn because the grain is wild and unpredictable but it is also labor intensive because of the cleaning. Plus you never know what you are going to find buried in the roots. Stones are common but I have also found such things as a door hinge! The base and the finial are made from walnut. The whole piece is 6 inches wide by 11 1/2 inches tall. The center hole in the base perfectly aligns the body in a vertical position and the pins are just long enough to hold the tip of the base off of the surface.
