This piece is from a birch tree cut in my own yard. It has been drying in my workshop for over a year and as you can see, it has now spalted beautifully. With most woods but especially birch, there is a small window of time between spalting and decomposing to the point of being no good. I caught this one just at the right time because the spalting is at it's maximum but the wood was still sound. It's 6 inches wide by 12 inches tall and it has been finished with several coats of high gloss poly. I buff between coats and after the last coat so it has a glass like feel and a deep looking finish.
